Hi folks,

Padre asked about what was going on at the moment, as the entry is in the thread about 'Hacking', I though it best to reply with a fresh thread.

Currently the 38% Campaign stands at 4112.  It's therefore vital that all members keep spreading the word and encouraging people to sign up, it's simply not enought to have signed yourself, we need to get the message across to as many as possible, so please keep up the good work.  If we can raise this total to over 10,000 then the 30% campaign team may get behind the campaign and help it go national.

I believe around 12,000 signed up to a separate petition under the heading Waterloo Petition, which was started some time ago by Major (Ret’d) Fowler to rasie awareness and support for the NDM.  We should be able to draw on this support when the time is right.

The FOI complaint is on going but looks like it will be upheld so we await developments there, and this may yield a positive result in getting some answers to the last decision.

On the Media front several member will be taking part in a BBC Look North programme to put the case for the NDM across to the wider public.  More details when known.

If you are prepared to be interviewd locally then can I suggest you contact your local newspaper and offer to tell your story and help promote the campaign.  If you get a positive response then either myself, Tony or Paul will be happy to help supply the overview or any support you need.

It has been said before but it is worth repeating, the only way we will shift this Governments stance on the NDM is by massive public support and by shaming them into action.  At the moment as far as the Government are concerned they have dealt with the issue, it's our job to change that attitude.

We have had a number of new members join in the last month or two so I'd like to  take this opportunity to welcome them all along and hope they too will become actively involved in what will be a just but long and difficult struggle for recognition.

Alan

Stay Focussed for a 'National Defence Medal'

Yes, our veterans agree that we need to stay focussed and raise public awareness to get greater support for the National Defence Medal Campaign.

At the moment with the continuing changes of Ministers and their staff in Government, the civil servants are directed to send out replies for MP's, Ministers and Lords that appear repetitious, not properly researched and inaccurate of what has really occurred. This very process is a travesty of justice and needs some leadership from the very top.

If the Prime Minister meets with Her Majesty at least once a week, this matter regarding tens of thousands of UK veterans must surely be important enough to be regularly mentioned.

The FOI request of the MoD around Sir John Holmes Report regarding the NDM is outrageous and an absolute disgrace. Not to mention contracting out confidential military records and the lack of records relating to fatalities and injuries of our Armed Forces. These are all points that can be raised to media regarding past and present individuals in government who did not disclose this to veterans families in the UK.

These are all the tip of the iceberg and must be used to counter any inaccurate statements from individuals in government.

BBC Look North will do a great job with this campaign, and a great effort by the Team.

Thank you for the link GB, and thank you to Brian and Shaun for putting themselves forward and taking part in the interview.

I see the MOD are still putting forward the same old misleading tat about the award of medals and the lack of risk.

Good work chaps.

Hello Alan, yes well done to Brian and Shaun for they're efforts for the Campaign. Its just a pity that there wasn't time to mention all or most of the main reasons for us wanting the NDM, ie The Berlin Airlift, The Cold War, Nuclear tests, Korea and National Service. Also, it would also open a lot of peoples eyes if they new the number of deaths of servicemen and women in this time of no risk.
Thanks again Brian and Shaun.

Hi John, The piece was quite short and it would need more itme to get the full message over. That said about half a million people watched so that is a very good thing. From small acorns big trees grow and we need to take advantage of everything that will shine light on the campaign.

All the best

Hi Alan, from small acorns is right, my comments were not a criticism, far from it. Maybe if we got a celebrity ( as we've mentioned many times before) then maybe he or she could command a bigger slot to get the full message out there. As you say, any publicity is a bonus. Cheers Alan, JD.

Well done Brian and Shaun, what needs to be done now is other BBC area's need to do the same as well as TV stations. Stuart has done his best with the time he was allocated and a lot of people would have watched it. Mo

Hi Padre,

I couldn't find the letter but I did find this rather good poem by Earle Ryan dtd 13th August 2015

https://www.facebook.com/NDMPUK

The National Defence Medal campaign faces a test
To get that medal on the Veterans chest
The road that lies ahead will be hard
A worthy campaign we can?t disregard
So on they march, no medal on their chest
This shameful Military wrong to redress
Earle Ryan 12th August 2015
I was trained to kill and prepared to die
Now old, a little frail, as the years slip by
A young man snatched from the street
The demands of National Service to meet
I wasn?t on my own or alone
As millions were taken from their home
We defended our country to a man
Stood toe to toe no one ran.
The pay was 28 shillings a week
With 5 shillings overseas extra to keep
They gave you a uniform and taught you drill
To fire a weapon and know how to kill
We are the men of yesteryear
That Britain's enemies held in fear.
We were good to have around
Defending the country and the crown
Many of us never returned home
Buried in those countries posted to roam
We were the guys who maintained the peace
Two long years of our lives before release.
So what happened to these men so bold?
Now pensioners with many very old
How has their country treated them I ask?
For complying and completing every task
You?d think they would be treated the best
Have a medal to wear on their chest
But this is not to be, you see
They are way down the list of priority
We give £30 billion in overseas aid
Yet the price of a Veterans medal cannot be paid
Charity begins at home is often said
The campaign for a medal is far from dead
See these old men march on Remembrance Sunday
All in step, as they were on their passing out day
Smart as ever, all home bred
As they march to honour our fallen dead
Note no medal on them displayed
The price for defending their country never paid
Why can?t our Politicians see it our way?
A medal for our Vets is a small price to pay
The defence of our country has been on the cheap
Award the NDM for these men to keep
An award to our country?s best
A medal they can wear on their chest
Earle Ryan 13th August 2015

I am attempting to get one final 'last hurrah' interview with Radio Solent. My last one was very well received.

As a point of interest Earle Ryan was in 931 Squad RM with me for NS. Prior to NS I served for nearly 3 years with the RMFVR in order to get a place in the Corps. Earle was a superb soccer player and played for the Corps. I did a bit of boxing.

After NS, I continued as a reservist. Then years later I joined the Queen's 6/7(V)HSF as a Pln. Cdr.

As a co-founder of this campaign I am delighted with the enthusiasm of newer members and thank all of you accordingly.

Charles. 76/77 looming.

Hi Charles,

Many thanks for the update, I hope the interview works out well, excellent stuff. Let us know how things progress.

I'm working on trying to get a piece in to the local paper here, might lead to other things.

Hi folks,

I have updated the 38% campaign page to reflect the National Importance of the NDM and removed part of the text that related to the pre election situation as it was no longer valid.

'Contact from British High Commission following our letter requesting acknowledgement of defence service for our veterans'

I received a courtesy call this morning from their office and was advised this is being looked into at a senior level. There maybe some delay in process so what the outcome of this we shall just have to wait and see.

At least we are keeping the matter on the table which is positive.

I have added a link at the top of the home page entitled A Soldiers Story. This is of an interview with Roy Wilson held at Radio Harold Hill. The message speaks for itself.
It should run from the audio bar, if not, when you click on the link a grey/black box will appear. Double click that and a message will pop up asking you to OK media player. Click Allow Always and you should see the audio bar, just click on play.

Bravo Roy Wilson for your interview on Radio Harold Hill. At 83 years of age, you were excellent and what you lacked in delivery, you more than made up for with your passion and fire. I hope we can get more of the same type of exposure on National Radio and TV. God bless you Roy and I hope you receive your NDM before its too late.

Peter McWilliams has mentioned leafletting our own local areas ( amongst other ideas ) I was wondering if one of our members could maybe design a leaflet that was eye catching and has all the relevant details on, without being too busy....
We all could then download copies and place them in prominent positions in our local areas.
I am not very gifted in this design area, but I hope one of us is.
Regards to all, JD.
